Video: Sutekh the Parakeet Quotes Doctor Who

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

It’s been ages since I’ve had a chance to update the site so I thought I’d just add a quick post with a short video of my parakeet Sutekh The Destroyer, named after the classic Doctor Who villain of the same name from Pyramids of Mars.

Being the silly geek that I am, when I got him a few years ago I thought to myself “what’s the most ridiculous thing I could name a parakeet?” — given parakeets are small, harmless & friendly animals I figured the exact opposite would be an ancient and powerful god of evil, and so immediately thought of Sutekh from Pyramids.

tom baker returns to Doctor WhoConfirming a Doctor Who rumor that I wrote about here on the TARDIS Databanks back in March, Tom Baker will be returning to the role of the fourth Doctor — playing the role for the first time* since he left at the end of Logopolis back in March of 1981.

Tom will appear in a series of five new linked audio adventures collectively titled Hornet’s Nest, written by the brilliant but sometimes controversial Paul Magrs.

They will be released on CD, one a month, starting September 2009.

Mysterious Crater Appears Outside of New Doctor Who Exhibition In Coventry

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

auton smoking craterThe Coventry Telegraph reports that a mysterious crater has appeared overnight outside of the Coventry Transport Museum, just a day before the  opening of a new Doctor Who exhibition on Friday.

Reportedly, strange lights and smoke were seen to be emanating from the crater, and police have cordoned off the area while experts are being brought in to examine the scene.

Considering the timing, I can only assume the crater was caused by the auton control sphereAutons following their traditional pattern of spearheading their invasions with false meteors containing the Nestene Consciousness.

The consciousness is then used to animate various forms of plastic to deadly effect.

The new look for K9 in the spinoff series

It’s been known for some time that there has been a new Doctor Who spin-off series in the works starring the Doctor’s very own tin dog, K9.

Now we’re getting a first look at the new redesign of the character, who was first introduced in the 1977 Doctor Who story “The Invisible Enemy”.

K9’s new series has been variously called K9 Missions, K9 Adventures but now seems to be just simply K9.

The first series, currently shooting in Australia, will consist of 26 half-hour episodes, and is being developed by original co-creator of K9, Bob Baker.

Image of the Fendahl Coming out on Region 2 DVD in April

image of the Fendahl

One of my personal favorite Tom Baker stories, Image of the Fendahl, is coming to DVD in the UK this April.

Co-starring Louise Jameson as Leela, this story was classic Doctor Who’s most direct stab at outright horror, featuring the Fendahl, an ancient monster from Timelord myth which ate life itself.

One of the things that made this story so scary for me as a child was that it was one of the few times where we actually see the Doctor truly afraid, as encountering the Fendahl plays on his childhood fears from the stories he heard of them when he was young.

Monday, January 12th, 2009

john scott martin, dalek operatorJohn Scott Martin, who appeared in over 70 episodes of Doctor Who, has died at the age of 82.

Though they may not recognize his name, fans of the classic series of Doctor Who have seen his work again and again, as he played Daleks and many other aliens and monsters over the years, including a the Zarbi (The Web Planet), the Mechanoids (The Chase), a Mutt (The Mutants),  the Nucleus of the Swarm (The Invisible Enemy) and more.

While Martin mainly played monsters in the classic series, he also occasionaly played human characters including a miner named Hughes (The Green Death), although he was not always credited.
